Francesca Badalini
Francesca graduated in piano (at the Conservatorio in Genova) and in composition (at Civica scuola di musica Claudio Abbado in Milan) and attended several masterclasses about chamber music (with P. Badura Skoda and A.Kontarsky), composition for both theatre and cinema (included a masterclass with N. Piovani at Accademia Chigiana in Siena), improvisation and jazz piano.
Her work embraces improvisation, playing along silent movies original soundtracks she creates and composing scores for theatre, cartoon movies, short films, documentary films and silent movies on dvd (such as Ma l’amor mio non muore with Lyda Borelli and Cenere with Eleonora Duse).
She teachs piano, composition, improvisation and film music (Scuola Internazionale Musicale di Milano, Università del Tempo Libero di Melzo, Politecnico di Milano, Dreamers Film Academy) and creates music workshops for children.
Since 1999 she steadly works with the Cineteca Italiana as pianist, playing along silent movies projections. This work led her to compose and play live soundtracks for silent movies all across Italy, in France, Switzerland and in Tunisia (Venice, La Fenice; Milan, Castello Sforzesco; Genova, Teatro della Tosse; Nizza, Cinémathèque de Nice among the others) and in several festivals such as Festival del Cinema di Locarno (Locarno, Switzerland), Le Giornate del Cinema Muto (Pordenone, Italy), Il Cinema Ritrovato (Bologna, Italy), Festival du Cinéma Italien (Annecy, France), Castellinaria (Bellinzona, Switzerland), Sousse (Cinéma au Musée) among the others.
She composes music for Julia Gromskaya’s award-winning animated short films (she won 5 prizes for the best soundtrack) and for Simone Massi, David di Donatello award winner.
In 2010 she realized her first cd Musiche in bianco e nero that collects her best soundtracks.
In the same year she won Bianca D’Aponte award for best female Italian soundtrack composer.
In 2012 she composed the music of the Venice Film Festival animated opening sequence.
Since 2013 she works as a pianist for the screening of silent movies with the international cineclub La lanterna magica.
In 2017 she realized her new cd Shared Soul (Da Vinci Classics).
In 2022 she played as a pianist with Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano for the concerts dedicated to Beatles and Pink Floyd.
Since 2022 she teachs Improvisation and composition for silent movies in the Higher Educational Institute Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado.
